Analysing an image
TASK: Annotate this photograph using the following prompts:
The white paper/card that the person is holding and the difference with the darkness with the person's eyes and the light of the paper is what my eyes are drawn to first. This is because the paper stands out as it's very light and it contrasts with the eyes. The faces of people also stand out to me as it's the 3 things right in the middle which is where I normally look to first. I think the photograph was taken during the 1980's, because the only colours in the photo are black and white. It can also be took during the present time (around now when other colours were shown). This is because the person who took this could've edited it and made it black and white. I think the picture was taken by a man, because you can see there's a shield of a man at the top and he could be a friend of the person who's getting their photo took, however overall I don't really know who took it as there's not enough evidence. The photograph makes me feel confused, curious and creepy, because someone holding a paper in front of their face and having a picture of someone under them is not usual, unless they are trying to make a good mask which is failing. There's other pictures of people in the background as well as a plant at the bottom left. It's creepy because it looks like a dark old haunted house and there's lots of faces in the background, however there is possibly some light coming from the right. I find the colours in this picture intresting- it's black and white. These two colours show the emotion well (how people are feeling,) so that I get an understanding of some people in the picture. There's a plant just sitting in the room and people don't realise that it's there and also the colours of the picture at the bottom. I like the contrast of the picture turning from really light to really dark. If I could ask the photographer any question to help me understand the photograph, I would ask them, why is the picture black and white, why is there lots of faces, who is the person in the middle of the picture and who took the picture? These questions relate mostly to how does the photograph make me feel as I want to know more information I could be unsure about or maybe not sure enough. The title I would give the photograph is ''Dull darkness'', I would choose this, because basically when you look at the picture, you think of dull due to the colours and also the darkness due to how dark the room could be. The wall could be black and the house could be haunted and scary, there's nothing much on which is very boring and most of the picture is black. The white paper/card that the person is holding and the difference with the darkness with the person's eyes and the light of the paper is what my eyes are drawn to first.
